Heritage Themed Community Iftar 26th March

Integrate Todmorden organise a community Iftar every year in the Town Hall during Ramadan. Iftar means the opening of the Fast, it is a time when Muslims within the Todmorden Community Fast each day for a set period of time for 30 days.

This year, to mark the 150th of Todmorden Town Hall, the Iftar will had a heritage theme, looking at the history of the South Asian community in Todmorden.

The event was fully booked and some people were disappointed to be unable to attend. There was a slide show featuring old photographs of the Asian population, and the organiser spoke about when, how and why the south Asian population first began to arrive in Todmorden, and also spoke about the town hall being used for Asian weddings (for many years) and the Iftar (more recently).

“Really lovely, felt privileged to be invited into such an important cultural event. Very interesting to learn about south Asian contributions to Todmorden, and I was so impressed with the young people reciting the Qur'an and the nasheeds. Delicious food too!”
